Let’s Grow a Garden – Jane of Lantern Hill

Ahh, it feels great to finally start my first blog on this topic. I’ve often thought about planting a lovely garden, or at least a flower bed, per my favourite books. Of all my beloved L.M. Montgomery novels, Jane of Lantern Hill is up there with the best of them.

I love the character, and her interesting relationship with both her parents. I love the way she takes joy in her garden, and how well it’s described. I’ve said it before, but it’s really one of my favourite hallmarks of Montgomery’s books, and why I go back to them again and again.

Here are some quotes that describe Jane’s garden, with highlighted flowers you can get for your own:

“There was honeysuckle over the paling . . . “to bring the humming-birds,” said Little Aunt Em . . . and white and red hollyhocks against the dark green of a fir coppice and rampant tiger-lilies along the walk. And one corner was rich in pinks.”

“Little Aunt Em gave Jane a bunch of pansies and a handful of geranium slips when she went away. “It’s the right time of the moon to plant them,” she said.”

“And, dad, will you sow some flower seeds for me next spring? I won’t be here in time to do it. Nasturtiums and cosmos and phlox and marigolds… oh, Mrs. Jimmy John will tell you what to get, and I’d like a little patch of vegetables, too.”

So there you have it. If you’re wanting to plant a little L.M. Montgomery inspired garden bed, and enjoyed Jane of Lantern Hill as much as I did, you can plant the above. I struggled to find plant lists from my favourite books, and always thought it’d be great to have them. And if you like this type of article, let me know so I can write more in the future.
